TWO DAYS' DISTANCE
12,10 m., 2007
This documentary revolves around the incredible destiny of two illiterate sixty-year-old Bulgarian farmers (husband and wife), who have chosen to replace a miserable life on the verge of destitution in their village with the insecure yet promising existence of buskers in downtown Paris.
Through a series of carefully selected and arranged questions the reporter’s voice-over elicits responses that leave the viewer with a number of conflicting interpretations. It is difficult to decide whether one is to perceive this couple as featuring the backwardness of a Balkan culture; or as one of the last examples of Rousseau’s noble savage; or as self-reliant individuals who have preserved the American spirit of the frontier.
